16 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025 - 202616 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025 – 2026

We ‘all’ know that times are tough right now, and not just in business either!

And we also know that business success is never guaranteed sadly, but – there are certain actions we can take ‘now’ to give us the greatest chance of survival for the future, as we cannot simply rest on our laurels and hope that things will work out.

We have to be proactive, focused and smart in how we make our moves each day.

This means putting in place the risk lowering systems, processes and drivers, to ensure we are operating in the most effective, efficient and powerful ways whilst at the same time – increasing growth and improving performance.

Since global shifts regarding the economy and the trade tariffs and manufacturing areas amongst others are deeply affecting many small business owners in the U.K., there is no other option but to aim as high as possible.

In this post I will share with you ‘exactly’ what you have to do in order to ‘not just survive this storm’, but hopefully thrive and stick around for many more years to come.

First off – let me take you back to being a child

Was it a fun and great time for you?  Can you remember what was it like? Was it colorful? Was it simpler?  I do hope so, as mine was just wonderful.

My childhood was filled with many great adventures, as we often went out fishing for trout in nearby rivers, walked in the countryside, rode our bikes, climbed trees and went apple scrumping.

We also loved playing army in the woods, with sticks as guns, and hiding behind trees.

You’re childhood may have looked different to mine in the 1970’s/80’s era in the UK, but I hope you have some warm and colourful fond memories like I do.

Hopefully most of us have some great nostalgia that will stick with us for life.

One thing is for sure; as kids we were adventurous, we tested our boundaries, and we wanted to see how far we could go in most areas.

This was what being a kid was all about right?

But – we would also test each other’s skills and talents to see who was the best at whatever endeavors we found ourselves in.

This led to fun competitions during the summer holidays.

16 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025 – 2026

We all wanted to be the best at what we did back then, didn’t we?

And it’s okay to want to be great, it’s only human after all!

As kids we loved praise, and loved to feel that we were doing great at something, so we aimed to run faster, do wheelies on our bikes for longer, and perhaps climbed higher up the oak tree than our buddies.

It’s heart warming to recall those golden times for me.

Do you remember a times where you were praised for doing something you did well?

Did it make you feel amazing for a while?

  1. We competed to be the best.
  2. We had fun, dreamed and had no barriers.
  3. We wanted to win, but not above our love of friends.
  4. Even if we were competing against ourselves to be better each day, that was cool too.

I was never particularly good in school, but I was good at selling toys, running for a long distances and drawing.

So naturally, I aimed to become better at these things, some of it was useful!

The point is this; we knew what we could do well, and we knew some form of competition.

NOTE: We didn’t tend to place ourselves above others every time, it was just fun!

We had fun with friends, just as we should have fun in business.

But if we place our business and numbers above the human part, and above caring, we will suffer!

Many businesses are dying because the owber/operator has negated to look after others.

And many ignorant business owners still do not care about teams or the customer, but in these current economic challenges if we do not care, we will struggle.

So we want to win, but we should do so in the right ways, and that doesn’t mean we are being mean or selfish, it just means that we have that healthy human spirit for wanting to be the best whilst achieving something.

It’s quite simple; don’t ruin others lives to get to the top!

Now We Are Adults – Aren’t we?

Well kind of, maybe men never grow up?

But in a way, this is no different to back then.

In life, in roles and in businesses we have that spirit for wanting to be the best we can be, and we have that hunger for winning at something.

The human spirit a wonderful thing!

And competition can be a good thing in life and business, as it is a gauge to how well we are doing, and how well we need to be, spo ot can push us to fight with will and with that spirit.

Winning isn’t always about impressing our ego for self-interest, it can be simply to create greater success, make more sales, become more trusted, or to win more business, and that’s great.

We have to aim to be the best in our business, or we may fail!

As many will know, a small business is the livelihood for many, and we cannot afford to throw money at something without seeing returns and results.

We must see that we are needed and relevant!

Today – in the SME or small and medium sized business sector in the U.K. we account for nearly half of all jobs, and is a vital part of the U.K. economy, so we must protect that.

We can make a difference, not only to our families, communities, friends and society but to the local economy, so we should feel proud of that.

But in order to fulfil these roles and to thrive we have to become smarter and more aware.

This way we may lead the market effectively enough with a strong USP, in order to continue to see growth and carve out that solid long term trusted reputation.

The Future is Hopefully Bright

Who knows what it really brings, I don’t!

But right now we have to be able to compete with those who have the greatest messages, strategies, tech and systems, and we have to work with a strong tech presence where needed.

I havent mentioned AI yet in any detail, but if you need it in your model, and don’t consider implementing a strategic data driven AI system – you will simply get left behind.

In today’s business landscape others will have an advantage over you if you don’t have an AI system in place, if it is relevant to your development and growth.

But don’t worry just yet, as I will show you how you can outperform others very soon.

Now I mentioned USP or unique sales proposition amongst other things, and for good reason.

So what is your USP?

Do you have one?

Do you even know it?

You must get familiar with it now.

What this means is standing out, and being prepared to continually innovate ideas and refine offers, as you also place customer care at the top of the pile.

And you need a particular or unique benefit that separates you from your competitiors.

This is a crucial part of a top performing company’s overall objectives and marketing strategy, and in small/medium business models we also have to aim to master this in our business plans and strategic objectives.

This is what separates the wheat from the chaff.

It is what determines success over failure, and what will enable you to draw in those vital loyal longterm customers.

Not only that – we need our customers to tell others how great we are, but you knew that right?

We want others to share what they experience in positive ways, and to refer others to us.

My advice is get familiar with the important business ‘R’s.

  1. Become recommended = gain a good reputation from customers telling others about you
  2. Grow retention from returning customers = keep customers through excellent standards
  3. Attract referrals = gain new buyers from learning of satisfied current ones
  4. Receive great Reviews and Ratings = aim to receive the best reviews and respond with friendly communication with all reviews and ratings
  5. Reward customers loyalty and your team = Guide, mentor and support teams, give discounts and exclusive offers, and offer performance related pay and promotions

We are aiming to deliver the greatest value and quality to our happy customers, whilst beating competition to become the monopoly.  And we are trying to win at what we do as help our teams to be the best!

Winning At All Costs

Did you watch Wimbledon 2025?

Being half italian I enjoyed seeing Jannik Sinner win the Wimbledon title for the first tim in his career.

It was a sheer joy for me as I drank Prosecco, watched Sinners focus, power and technique, and marvelled at the athleticism of both athletes.   Both were at the top of their game, battling it out to win the ultimate prize.

Undoubtedly Alcaraz is just as good as Sinner, and has won other tournaments against Sinner.

It’s healthy competition.

Both Sinner and Alcaraz are good mates off the court, but they went into battle with one objective; TO WIN!

We must have that laser focus and hunger to win, and continually battle to become beter every day to outperform others.  And it doesn’t mean we don’t get on with competitiors, it just means we have a healthy desire to win.

When I say ‘all costs’ I mean doing everything in our power to ensure we are doing all we can, but this doesn’t include being illegal or corrupt.

Today The Struggle Is Real

We all know that, right?  Sure we do.

Life and business is always challenging, and it always will be.   But maybe now more than ever business is extremely tough for various reasons.

Unless you have been living on the moon, you will know that in our current reality and economy, the small business owner is facing so many challenges and struggles today, due to the fact that there are so many uncertainties, both nationally and globally in 2025.

With increasing costs, taxes, trade deals, tariffs, cuts and the constant strain in the U.K. with the cost of living crisis, it means the small business economy is facing many daunting challenges, setbacks and stresses.

That is why this post is so important, as we cannot bury our heads in the sand and ignore what we need to do – we just have to have that focus and passion to make things work.

Aim For The Light

There is darkness around us sometimes, as we all know, but we must keep looking ahead!

It’s not all bad news though, as there are currently many small business owners that are fortunate enough to be expanding and experiencing with significant growth now, both traditionally and in the digital space.

We want to be one of those small business owners.

But how?

I will show you what the best do, and you will become a growth expert soon, but you need to be aware of the fact that it takes significant action and consistency.

Right now, half of all small businesses are facing those increased costs and taxes, which can pile on the pressure to stay afloat, and this can mean there is no other option but to apply new monitored strategies, improved shifts in thinking, and gaining a complete awareness around products and markets.

This could mean making vital measured changes in order to survive.

Let’s look at what’s going on in more detail to better understand how to navigate 2025/26 in the best ways.

16 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025 – 2026

Business Rates Relief

This is in place to support small businesses, and the primary process to help a small business lower rates bills.
These come in the form of schemes which can lower and even eliminate rates for some small businesses in the U.K. which include, the hospitality area, retail sector and other sectors, and also those businesses that are dealing with financial challenges.

However, the rates relief is reducing in 2025, meaning less support for certain types of small businesses.

There are various types of relief and one is SBRR, Small Business Rate Relief, which is in place to reduce rateable values.
What does this mean?
You will not be required to pay business rates if your rateable value is lower than £12,000.  However some of you will of course have higher rates.
CLICK HERE TO SEE WHAT IS RATEABLE VALUE (RV) IS IN MORE DETAIL
Perhaps you run or operate a charity, café or bar, or music venue, and this scheme can potentially help you with relief.
NOTE: There is the possibility of assistance from the local council that can cancel business rates for some of those facing hardship.

Relief for charities comes in two forms

It’s either mandatory or discretionary.

Unfortunately, in the retail, leisure and Hospitality sectors, the business Rates Relief scheme that offered 40% relief on small business rates, finishes at the end of March 2026.
This means that it is in operation now until that date of March 2026.
What will this mean for you?  If you are in any of these sectors you will need to check what you may be entitled to – and what may be ending for you.

The Future and National Economic Risk

Currently in 2025, with higher taxes, greater lifestyle costs and a third of all UK small business operations reporting the biggest challenge moving forward to be the uncertainty of the UK economy, it is very concerning.

For many small businesses this could mean the risk of failure.

Although Trump has been advised to reconsider his tariff and trade deal percentages, two thirds of all small businesses nationally and internationally still face real trade challenges, and that means an impact on turnover.

It can also mean letting go of staff and team members.

What I have always done is talk to business owners and managers, by going into my local area and speaking with them, and using online tools to connect and communicate, to support those independent and community based operations in my hometown.

Those feeling the economic pinch need to be able to ask questions and to find solutions, so I always try to support businesses at various stages of operation.

What I recommend to others is all included in this post.

I also shop locally where possible, because I care about my people and my city, and so should you, especially if you want custom in return.

Supply Chains Mastery

With the affects of brexit, covid and the further complications of global wars and tariffs, it is becoming increasingly tough for some businesses and their supply chains to work effectively.

Many owners are facing supply chain concerns today with over 20% reporting worries about their overseas supply chains, and increased costs of sourcing materials, transportation, and labor costs.
This can have a huge impact on U.K. businesses.

In addition to this – many small business owners face shortages with staff, increased expenses, and of course global economic unrest.

With expected delays from the import of goods more commonplace, and with supply chains issues, and the consistent changes in customer demands, it is tough for many businesseses to navigate this time successfully and profitably.

As you may know, customer demands can shift, especially with so much choice these days, so the key is to gather as much information and feedback as possible from existing customers and from polls, surveys, questionnaires and quizzes, to use this data, so you can determine what your next steps will be.

For example, with AI now becoming an integral part of life and business, we can leverage this tool in tremendously effective ways.

We can ask any question, and it can speed up operational processes, or even do the more boring tasks to enable our teams to focus on getting more business and the strategic stuff.

So perhaps you could use an AI tool to help your business?

You can also hire or outsource experts where necessary to support you in your strategies and processes.

Maybe AI can help you to get on top of your tax?

AI can offer many potential benefits for tax filing, including increased efficiency and real-time assistance, but it is not perfect or flaw free.

We cannot simply trust AI without human operation to monitor it’s actions overall – at least in it’s infancy.

There will be mistakes, and cyber and security issues, so we must be aware of the sensitivity of dealing with AI and it’s potential risks.

16 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025

Common Tax Burdens

We all know that tax can be tough on all of us, (and let’s face it – most of us aren’t billionaires), so with the increase in employer NI Contributions, amongst other things, this of course increases stress – especially on those struggling to manage any kind of work life balance, living with lower wages and increased cost of living.
This is why it pays us to identify every single penny, outgoing, expense and cost we have, in both our personal lives and business lives.
I would advise that you keep personal life costs as separate as possible from business costs.  Why?  Because if your business struggles to stay afloat and you have everything invested in it, this could ruin your life.
I have seen this happen dozens of times.

Streamlining Power

How Can It Help You?

Streamlining is definitely something to look at.

What this essentially means is that you find ways in which you can increase the rate by which you work, operate and hire, in order to become more efficient – and see where there may be vital adjustments and improvements made in what you currently do.

How?  CLICK HERE TO SEE SCRIBE’S EXPLANTION OF STREAMLINING

Now Is The Time!

Isn’t it always?

There is no time to hope and pray.

Many SME’s are currently seeing exceptional levels of growth, and many business owners whom I have spoken with are feeling positive about their financial future in certain sectors.

Those that have anticipated change, kept their eye on competition, and have been able to dominate their market whilst often streamlining are confident that through continued focus and consistent monitoring they will be able to serve their customers and communities for many years to come.

In fact – half of all Small businesses in the U.K. moving into the second half of 2025 and into 2026 are hopeful that they will still increase their workforces.

That’s good to know isn’t it.

This can mean increased buoyancy in the local community, which in turn grows the local economy and revenue.

And if more locals spend their money locally, and sellers spend their money locally, everyone can win without the need for significant outside help.

Foreign Supply Versus National Supply

Of course – some will always rely on foreign supply chains, import and export in Europe and globally, and so even the most local of businesses can still be greatly affected by what is going on now.

However, if there are ways in which an operation can function at optimal levels, and have strong supply chains within the same country then that can make things way easier and less risky.

What this means is having connections with ‘domestic supply chains’ which can be hugely beneficial.

But how exactly?

  1. It could mean less costs in general
  2. Closer relationships with more local or nationwide folk
  3. Potentially greater reliability and better communication

The key is to always look at alternative options as a back up, so if your current supply chain is causing you problems for whatever reason then you can consider alternate solutions.

Research other suppliers nationwide and see if you can find a trusted supplier in the U.K.

Look at adjusting your supply chain strategies in order to improve that reliability and processes efficiency.

You and or other persons should always be alert when looking at potential weak spots in your business.  This requires your team keeping an eye on global and European trade news, to consider how this may affect you and determine what measures may be required.

Gaining A Competitive Edge

Whilst you now have some tips to absorb, you need to act.

So consider these things:

1) Do you need to adapt more with your customers needs, or

2) Respond more to customers communications, or

3) Look at your products and the market to ensure you stay ahead of shifting current trends?

Perhaps this:

4) Offering more ways to pay, keeping in contact with those who have left their e-commerce basket, or following up through emails and other forms of communication such as text messages.

5) It might be that you need to ask better questions to your customers and seek out what their needs are now in person.

It might be that:

6) You need to obtain the right kinds of funding so you can invest more in – marketing, finding new business, hiring, business products or tech.

7) Perhaps you need to operate your brand with greater visibility to position yourself in the market in ways that make your presence significantly better than others.

Good Small Businesses Are Vital To The U.K. Economy

The private sector are bolstering the national economy, and there are currently several million small and medium sized businesses in operation nationwide in the U.K. – so there is no reason why YOU cannot be one of the best out there.
Did you know that the SME operator and owner helps to create over £1.9 trillion to the UK economy every year, and employs a whopping 49% of the entire UK workforce.
That’s half of the entire workforce in the U.K.!  And you are part of this.

Fight For it – these aren’t just motivational words!

If you started a small business with that will, fire and purpose to make a difference out there, and if you had the passion to do something for yourself, you must see it through.  You owe it to yourself, not to be put off by our mess by the government.
And even though these are hard times, and especially in that first year, you are tougher than you may think.
You have what it takes to take your business to the next level, IF YOU CAN KEEP GOING.
If you have survived the first three to five years of business, you are already very resilient, and more than capable, but also quite rare.
In fact, through this you will have gained that competence and experience that will guide you through the next three years to drive exceptional performance.
This means you can certainly reduce signifiant risk through your knowledge, and it means you are fortunate ‘not’ to be part of the 40% of SME’s that will fail in that time – often through their own ignorance.
Congratulations! Just don't get too big headed!

You must keep that standard

In fact – you must consistently improve your standards, and not drop the ball.
As time passes, the percentage of failures increases naturally, therefore you can never get too comfortable, short sighted or become complacent in what your role requires of you and your team.
You must always look around you, keep an eye ahead, aim to be the best, and not fall into the trap of thinking that you are ever safe just because you are experiencing a great month or quarter.
Survival and thrival (is that even a word?) but, by you understanding the fundamentals of what i’m talking about here it means you can operate a successful business.
A part of this means studying your craft and studying the best businesses around you!
So, are you ready to beat competition now?  Great!

A Competitive Edge Or Advantage – In Depth

This relates to the unique strengths, skills and resources that a small business may own and operate with.   These may be regarding relationships with customers, location, timing, technology, teams and whatever else there is to give you an edge over others.

Through having ‘some or all’ of these strengths it enables you to become the primary choice for the consumer.

You can achieve that edge by ensuring you are always close to your products and your customers.

All through delivering the very best quality, whilst keeping costs managed, and having the awareness to create increased loyal custom.

But How Will You Achieve This?

  1. Online & offline communication sales process – don’t leave customers alone lost and annoyed
  2. Follow-ups, care & consistent relationship building – must always be improving communication
  3. Delivering quality/standards consumers have come to expect – don’t cut corners/ costs in wrong areas
  4. Be open minded to shifts in demands and the market – watch trends & respond, lead your team to do so also
  5. Spend time with partners/ teams/ Investors identifying how to outperform others – this is always ongoing through meetings and in all areas of the business
  6. Ask more questions, gather data – act upon data with appropriate measured responses

16 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025 – 2026

Healthy Competition Is Mostly Good!

Well, competition is good in that it helps us ‘all’ get better, and move past our self perceived limitations of what good business is, as we study our nearest competitors.
Forms of healthy competition means that we are in a great market area, as we know that others are also operating in this sector.
To outperfom competition we should always push ourselves to continually advance, improve our game, and become better than yesterday, through continued specific actions and tasks.
Specific actions = not a scatter gun approach, but defined strategic tasks
For example, if you have AI tools, you can allow these to do your boring admin stuff, whilst you create more business and grow the business.
If you look at some of the world’s greatest athletes and see how their mental game works (Remember Yannik Sinner?) you will see specific patterns and behaviours that drive their successes.
This means leading your team with the best practices, and harnessing interdependent and collective power.
It also means, acting with integrity, and operating with core values, with good solid morals and ethics.
Competition can be both good and bad, but we can always learn from it and take from it.
Just as we do in life.

Good and bad

I have undoubtedly learned as much from the worst people in the world, as I have from the best.
Because ‘all’ people show us something!
We can choose what to do and what lessons we take from others, and that is wisdom.
For example, we can learn lessons from the likes of Hitler and Putin, just as we can learn the lessons from HRH the Dalai Lama.
Good competition hopefully means we are in a healthy market, and so we can study others around us to motivate us and drive us forward like nothing else.
Staying obsessed with ‘our baby’, to create that burning fire to succeed even in the toughest times is vital.
Taking from experience is lso vital, and without that drive we may lose motivation, so we must ensure we are all holding eachother accountable and equally passionate.
By the way, this doesn’t mean we should blame eachother for short sightedness, it means supporting eachother and motivating eachother to find solutions quickly.

Keep An Eye Out ALWAYS!

Our obsession shouldn’t make us blinkered though, nor too focused in one area, but focused in all areas.
Ensuring our team are ALL obsessed in ‘all areas’ and not blind to whats going on around us.
For example;  you may need to priortise on one area such as supply chains or tariffs, and so you or another must prioritse this task, but that doesn’t mean you all ignore other areas just because they seem less pressing.
Talking of tariffs, let’s get into that for a moment.

16 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025 – 2026

The Tariff Wars

I’m sure you are aware of the current global tariff wars, since Trump started slapping higher tariffs on many countries as he is led by getting the best ‘deals’.

You must understand the impact of these global shifts, and what these will mean for your business now.  Stay in tune with the state of your market and anticipate potential changes.

Many UK business manufacturers currently sell to the U.S., but with the latest tariff increases and trade deals it could mean more costs for you and less profits for you.

Some of these increases could sadly lead to losing great staff members.

And it might mean ending business trade with the U.S. for some manufacturers.

Even in the U.S. these tariff shifts are causing great confusion and chaos for American manufacturing operations.  And the creation and selling of products in the U.S. is not easy when there are consistent changes being made.

In the U.K. we operate with a global Tariff the UKGT, which applies to most goods imported to us.  That is unless there are specific trade agreements.

Increased tariffs

This impacts on the manufacturing sector as it affects costs of importing, and it could mean lost business when exporting.
In the U.K. we have seen some suspended tariffs on certain products to support businesses which is great, and the UKGT is designed to help support our businesses through the reduction of Manufacturing and other costs, but of course it doesn’t apply to all.
With the tariffs on imported goods coming into the U.K. this raises the costs of manufacturing, which in turn can impact the positioning of UK manufacturers around the world.
In other words; we can and potentially will lose business abroad through increased tariffs and trade deals.
Also, when U.K. products are sold overseas and tariffs are placed on those foreign buyers, it could lead to U.K. products being dropped in favor of nationally made equivalents, as the cost of our exports becomes too high to foreign buyers.

Supply Chains

Then there are supply chain delays, rising costs in general and difficulty in sourcing materials, which leads to potential revenue reductions.
So as the U.S. have now placed new tariffs on various areas of the U.K. manufacturing sector it can reduce our business profits, and even lead to loss of business trade and reduced exports to the U.S..
Thus we must think about our options and determine the best course of action, and as I touched on earlier, we may be able to find an alternative national solution to providing us with domestic supplies.  This means using UK suppliers.
We are also impacted by the tariff changes in Europe that is placed on them from elsewhere, which eats into costs and profits.
This may well affect your current business decisions, and it may affect the rates you may be expected to pay.
Therefore you must observe your strategic business and marketing plan which can be edited and adjusted as often as required to support your future growth.
16 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025

Get to Grips with Change

Educate all of your workforce on shifting government decisions and strategic decisions you may need to make.
Be competent, confident and assertive in what you do, and do what is necessary.  This means using experience, wisdom and past challenges to make better choices, and hiring others that can do what you cannot do.
Maybe you need greater business law training, PR or media exposure, more effective marketing, greater cyber security, or more meetings every morning.
Whatever it is do it!
The fact of the matter is that there are more and more businesses today being hacked and ruined overnight, all because they have not implemented sufficient security measures.  So don’t let something sloppy like this destroy you.
A little combative and assertive action here is good, but it should never drive you into unhealthy actions or decisions.
Sadly there are still Senior leaders, CEO’s and teams that will do whatever it takes to make sales, or gain popularity, even if it is unethical, just like some governments, corporations and others tend to do.
You must never unethically risk your reputation, or place profits above people, you must know where the limits are legally, and determine what the edge of this is.
Good practice is fundamental to all good business, and without this you fall into bad practice and ethics, and enable corruption and negligent behaviour to become the norm.

Bad business will fall in the end. Even if it rises fast!

To be clear; it is okay to be a maverick, whereby one seeks to think and act differently to most, and has a vision that may be more independent, ballsy, and unique, requiring courage and guts, but illegal or underhand practices will never win.
Whilst being a maverick can and does often come with increased boldness and risk, it is not illegal.
Having faith can drive growth, but not blind faith, so ensure your beliefs are alligned with real planned daily tasks to push forward.
These ideas can enable you to reap significant rewards through challenging the status quo and convention and even creating innovation.
This can mean being a modern pragmatic leader that can drive focus and potentially enable disruption, whilst also being open to new ideas that can improve your operation.
Think of some of the disruptors out there that are in the top 1% of entrepreneurs who get way faster results than most, because they have that courage to look at sometimes radical ideas.
But be mindful – not all disruptors are good, they can be destructive.
Some disruptors can destroy markets, use unethical tactics and create great losses in business and in jobs if they simply don’t care about what their actions create around them.
This may equate to market instability for others.
If you are serious about gaining a competitive advantage and edge though, and you wish to push harder, through what I have mentioned and through creating new markets or products that may not have been previously considered, then seek good counsel and get out there and do it.
As long as it comes from a good healthy foundation.

Be Smarter Than The Rest

Seek to be well informed, drive teams to be independent thinkers and leaders, and let them develop their ideas, so they can be on their ‘A’ game and strive for excellence.
In other words;  don’t limit others, lift them up, and elevate your brand in order to stand out.
This can mean you enabling smart media concepts and intelligent marketing, where you can have a focus on what’s working and what isn’t, whilst never using a random scatter gun approach.
Know what works best and increase it!
It may be that your sector enables invention or innovation, and even in-house proprietary technology that can give you that strong edge or advantage over others.
You must use the right tech and tools to reach the right people, and do so by driving consistent standards in every corner of the organisation.
And with a little pressure which pushes us, it can enable us to think and act differently to most.

You cannot do it all alone.

On an individual level, trying to do all of this can cause burn you out and create immense stress, so there is a balance to be had in understanding yourself in your role, and in how you navigate with teams so all can fulfil their roles.
Burn out can be common amongst energetic fast thinkers and stubborn leaders that refuse to quit, so be aware to take breaks and spend some quality quiet time to recharge.
Often times the quiet moments are when the best ideas come through.
Be aware also: When a small business is so focused on beating competition this can cost a great deal more, and it can use up precious resources.  Thus you need to manage your resources very effectively and efficiently.

Where can you cut costs but still maintain high standards?

In the first few months of 2025, with taxes up and costs increasing to all, trying to manage and monitor ‘all’ expenses and costs was a tough process.
That is why we should always look at where we can put in a cost cutting strategy that can be achieved without high level assets being affected.
Of course – you certainly don’t want to let go of great team members and staff, but if there are people who are being carried, or looked after all of the time, then really consider if they are an asset or a liability.
Sadly there are many companies today outsourcing to other countries to save costs, but it is not all good news because this oftens causes customer service issues and increases complaints.
Your standards are at stake when doing so, so be very careful how and where you are trying to save or cut costs.
In the long run it may cost you more headaches and expenses by clearing up messes that needn’t have occured.

Winning Through Right Ethics

I have already covered this in some detail, but I will remind you one more time.

Get clear on what your principles and policies are now.

What is your code of conduct?  What are your values?  How are you responsible and what are you doing about it?  How do you stay transparent, honest and build trust with all people?

Good business practice is a critical factor for being serious about longterm success.   And being above board and legal to build consistent growth, whilst reducing liabilities and negligent behaviours will give you that winning edge.

Most of us have the desire to succeed and win at something, and this is what keeps us on our toes, but ‘some’ sadly engage in poor behaviors that are underhand in order to beat others.
Through desperation some operators may try underhand tactics to beat others, but they will fail in the end, so just don’t do it.
Always remember not to negate or neglect core principles of ethical foundations.
Be sure to stay ahead through maintaining an edge with tech, with an ethical stance, professionalism and expertise, and through developing your core strengths through consistent mastery of business and people skills.
Stay in integrity, and if need be take some courses to enhance your professionalism, or listen to useful podcasts, listen to others, and know your craft more than anyone else.
Remember that you can learn from failures and wins.  And not just your own.

Always Take Notes – There Is Plenty FREE Information out There

Write down what you learn from others businesses, podcasts, articles, business news and events, and act upon what you learn.
Whilst it is true that experience and education from being in business for a significant amount of time is certainly an added benefit, as it creates wisdom and better decision making, it is not critical ‘if’ you can learn quickly and critically apply what you learn from gathering the best ideas from others.
VERY IMPORTANT:  Study successful small and medium business models out there and see what they do, how they do it – and why.
Through identifying key areas, you will become aware of certain patterns and processes that you can also draw from in your strategies.
This is truly the gold that is lying around.
Also, watch others when they buy, understand their behaviour, study their actions, and from this ensure you implement the right customer relation tools such as your CRM systems.
Keep the all important relationships active and dynamic.
What does that mean?  Ensure that all communication channels are clear, simple and caring, so that the consumer feels that connection and care at all times.
Treat your team as important partners and assets, and look after them, ensuring they feel valued, supported and appreciated, as this in turn leads to greater output, accountability and performance.

No Blame

The key is to improve and grow.
Blaming others causes bad feelings, and I know that some people are awfully testing, but try and find solutions together quickly, in order for your team members to feel confident in being open and approached.
Enable those who have doubts, issues and complaints to come to you, through keeping that open line of communication.
We all know that there are those in teams that may not be assets, but more like rotten apples, so your job is also to let go of the bad apples that are not adding value or contributing to your business or team as a player.
It is never easy letting go of people, so it is worth first consulting your team of experts, and asking fairly what they feel about their own roles, workloads and tasks, and asking what they feel they add.
This is so you can help others improve, grow, and build trust between you, through building communication, increasing output and offering support before going through the process of letting someone go.
Learn to trust your gut more to do what you feel is right.  This often comes from past experience.

A Solid Reputation Matters – But At What Cost?

A good ‘if not’ excellent reputation is very important, and if this is pushed to one side in favor of quick and potentially harmful actions then it could destroy a business reputation in a matter of minutes as you know.
And you may also know that some really bad leaders have caused whole companies to collpase, through poor decision making.
Some leaders will always place numbers above people, and through often protecting their self interest and ego over all other people, they may have little care for others, which is often seen in the increasingly greedy and selfish corporate world.
We all know business means numbers, of course, no business can survive without this, but – this shouldn’t mean we simply ‘use’ people selfishly to get there.
There are plenty of small business psychopaths, corrupt government types, billionaires and corporation CEO’s that have no care whatsoever for their workers, or even for humanity.   Some will only see those numbers, and this is why staff and teams can become angry, upset and feel alienated, and ultimately leave.
I won’t name any names here but I bet you could think of one or two ‘so-called leaders’ that are well known for putting people after the reputation and business.

Modern Leadership and Creating Progress

I believe that being a solid modern leader to all through seeking to evolve and improve people and improve business standards, offers greater progress in business and in life, and brings out the value in people, and you will be rewarded for your efforts through giving and listening.
By the way, this is for you guys, – it’s okay to be honest about your weaknesses, and to get help with them, it’s ignorant and dumb to cover over weakness when it could jeopardise everything.   Also guys, quit with the harrassment of women colleagues.
I have heard too many horror stories from those hiring the wrong types that can jeopardise everything by being over the top with other members of the team, so just don’t be a douche bag.
Another point I need to raise:  be very careful which overseas workers you hire, as some people will lie about their experience and lie about their ability.  This will become a nightmare for you to deal with.
This can also cause no end of problems for standards and costs  in companies that need good workers.
The key to exceptional success lies in working with other bright and passionate minds, that have a vested interest in being there, and can work well through having the right potential.
Look for those who are great in interview, but also those that can be challenged and come up with answers.
Look for the brightest types in specific areas and roles, and ensure you working only with the best, or at least those that have that great potential to be capable of being trained quickly.

16 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025

Know your team and know your customers

As you should know, it is always healthy to ask questions from the customer point of view.
If you can glean useful ideas from customers, potential customers and those that have left your circle, you will start seeing what may be missing, and therefore be able to apply specific business strategies, processes and marketing, with great effect.
So become he customer and also study your nearest competition.
Many high performing global companies today would simply not exist if it wasn’t for healthy competition – and if it wasn’t from them studying their competition to improve.
Many top global companies will spend millions on beating competition, but you don’t have to.
You don’t need millions, you just need to be smarter than most.

What If You Have No Competition?

If you don’t have any competition when starting out then you must ask why this is.
No competition can mean that you are entering an unknown area or previously undiscovered sector or market, and with this comes it’s own set of risks, as it may have never been explored before.
It might even mean that this area is stagnant and too high risk to enter into.
If there is zero demand for what you are attempting to offer then it can crash and burn, unless you can somehow market and advertise enough to change minds.
But how much will that cost you?  And is it worth it?
However, it might also be a good thing if there is no competition, as it might mean that you are offering something entirely new, original even unusual, and this can be appealing.
This may also mean that you will be well received, and let’s face it – most things were once new and different anyway.
So can you appeal enough as a new kid on the block?
The risks may come from you having to undertake greater promotional and advertising strategies to get enough eyes on you, which can equate to more costs and time, as you are an unknown quantity, so you have to weigh up all factors and the potential risks when there is no competition.

Pssssst.  You don’t have to be original!

That’s right, and you may have noticed that some products out there are not exactly original.
They have been copied!
Just as many inventions, services and start-ups have.
You may have seen winning products that have been closely copied by others.  And it may be in many sectors.
As an example, if you think about Lurpak spreadable butter, it is a very popular brand in the U.K. – so you will see shops such as Aldi, Lidl and Tesco create similar colored packaging for their spread, as the consumer already has an emotional connection with Lurpak.
Supermarkets will strive to offer something a little cheaper, yet supposedly with the same quality and flavor.
This is apparent in many products and services around the world, and another area is Tesla.   If you take a look at a classic Tesla shape today, you will see that the likes of Polestar 2, Hyundai, Honda, BYD and other companies are copying the design somewhat.

Nothing is  is truly original these days!

Essentially by copying designs, colors and packaging to mimic the already trusted products, it can capture the interest of those previously loyal consumers, and entice them to you.
Like most businesses, you must consider the laws around what you create.
For example, Copyright infringement is when someone will use copyrighted work without the permission of the holder.  This means outright copying, creating and sharing protected works without the permission or the owner to those right.
Again,don’t do things illegally!

16 Tips On Gaining A Competitive Edge For 2025/26

Vital Questions To Consider NOW! (I will say the word ensure a lot by the way!)

  1. Keeping Customers. If running a business online which may also be offline or an ecommerce store, how are you ensuring you are not losing your visitors. These potential customers need to be drawn in.  For example; if a customer has come close to buying what stopped them?  Or if they have items in a basket then why did they abandon that basket?  Move through the buyers journey to ensure you are not missing a step or process.  Stay in commuincation to encourage them to come back and finish the transaction.  1) Perform this action yourself – become the buyer.  2) Hire an expert or company to help you cover all bases to minimize loss and maximize sales. 3) Use Clearpay, Paypal & other options to ensure the customer has choices & completes a purchase.
  2.  Losing Offline Customers. Why do you lose potential offline customers?  Why are they going elsewhere?  What can you do to attract them back?  Talk to them and create a solution to bring them back.  Look at businesses around you to see what others do to keep customers.  1) Look at foot fall and the numbers of shoppers each day.  2) Do you need a new shop fitting or an interior designer?  3) Monitor the numbers – and look for repeating patterns, try reverse engineering a service or strategy that is from competition, to see how it achieves results. This is a valuable tool for understanding competitors’ approaches, and for improving existing products, and identifying opportunities for innovation where required.  Master ALL these metrics: This means Cash flow, Net profit margin, Sales revenue, Cycle time reduction, Gross margin, Customer satisfaction, Customer retention, customer lifetime value, cost savings, quality improvement, data quality, Accuracy, timeliness, completeness, consistency.
  3. Tools and Tech. Hire tech experts, store and backup data, optimise all sites, use cyber tools to prevent crime.  Are you using advanced systems and tools for your business operation?  If not why not?  Where could you be left behind?   You cannot afford to miss a trick, meaning investing intelligently in the right tools and – letting go of what is an extra cost or not serving you.  You can have an edge technologically, as well as in every other area offline.  Without the right key systems in place you simply cannot achieve optimum output and performance.  What do you need to invest in?  Examples are:  Industry specific tools, websites, conferencing tools like Microsoft teams, cyber security, Google analytics, employee tracking software, Automation, a sophisticated marketing mix, online backup and storage, accounting software and tools.  Here is a tip from wordpress backup experts duplicator.com who you can join by clicking here:Protect your backups from ransomware 3-2-1 rule:
    • 3 copies of your data
    • 2 different storage types
    • 1 copy stored off-site that attackers can’t reach
  4. Exposure. This means offline and online. Using the right people and tools.  Master the key procedures you have in place with social media, advertising, marketing, branding and your website SEO.  Using Google to advertise on search engines and Facebook feeds.  What about your strategic key word rich content?  How can you ensure that you are being seen enough in your daily efforts? ‘Who’ is managing this and is this comprehensive?  How do you stand out and stay relevent through knowing what is working/not working in your efforts?  How are you communicating your brand?  In your offline efforts you can also use simple communication, flyers, pop-up stands and stalls, TV/radio adverts, events, giveaways, conferences and so on, whilst also ensuring you are comprehensively testing your efforts.  What does your brand say online?  How does it compare to competition?  Is your key demographic seeing you enough?  Are you capturing e-mails and details from brief visits in order to send e-mail communications?
  5. Online Strategies and Data. How are you managing and measuring conversion rates?  Understand your CRO strategy: Conversion rate optimization.  This means maximizing Conversion Rates & increasing sales. 6. Conversion rate mastery. With the right systems and processes in place, how will you ensure you turn visitors into buyers?  I can highly recommend ConvertCart.  They have a decade of experience transforming website & client performance through CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization). I personally believe that Convert Cart are the primary experts in this area at helping companies and brands get more sales conversions.  You need to ensure you are not missing out on potential sales through examining your current online business systems data.  Don’t leave sales to chance because chance is not a metric and you cannot afford to lose a sale. Only through observing and examining your complete sales and systems processes will you understand what tweaks and changes are required.  Also study these areas; CPA or cost per acquisiton, CLV or customer lifetime value.
  7. Offline Mastery. How do you communicate each area of your business physically?  In your local community you need to be associated with quality and trust, and remind your customers why you are the best option.  Help customers to stay – and if they have left you, get them to come back by speaking with them.  What are you doing  to ensure customers return?  Are you really building loyalty through connection and in what you do?  Where can you focus more on personal relationships?  What value does your brand offer?  Great deals are very powerful, and even if you sell high quality products and charge more for what you sell, you have to ensure you deliver that extra service and memorable experience.  Ask yourself what your store looks like, and if you need another eye on your interior design.  Don’t ignore the goals of: Return customers, Retention, Referrals, Rewarding customers/teams, receiving great Reviews.  Gather your data, and ensure you study your “churn” rates.  The rates by which customers cease being your customer. Look at specific time periods in your shop or premises to determine what your churn is and why your customers may be ignoring you or leaving you.  Monitor the percentage loss of customers in relation to your profit margins.  Create and test new offline strategies to aim at getting back old customers and acquiring new customers.  Maybe you need to hosts mini events, offer products in the street, partner with successful brands, creating greater awareness of your brand.  ore to acquire new customers, so always be mindful of ‘how’ to keep
  8. Trade and manufacturing.  I’m sure by now you are aware of our current climate, as we face huge global shifts and challenges, trade wars, supply chain issues and potential higher costs for all.  This drives a need to cut costs, reduce waste, and even sadly let go of staff members in order to survive.  Look at streamlining, managing your processes and ensuring your workflows are as efficient and effective as they can be through comprehensive strategic planning.  I can advise that you consider looking at alternate national suppliers if needed, and negotiate better deals where possible, rather than using outside of the U.K. trade and materials.
  9. Productivity and effectiveness. Pinpoint where and how can you optimize your operation more.  Do you use your resources intelligently now?  For example: What about using organic Search Marketing?  Can you maximise exposure of your website in search engine page results with less spend?  The blog you are reading has specific keywords, on page SEO, backlinks and more, which is all free.  Just a little work means less spend for good results.  Improved performance, without it costing more.  Perhaps you need more automation and greater customer service?  Where can you improve channels of communication for free?  Effective productive effort means a focus on measuring data, observing employee productivity, mastering key tasks and process improvement whilst optimizing resources.  Study the rate of output per unit of input.  HERE ARE 4 TYPES OF PRODUCTIVITY FOR YOUR ORGANISATIONS SUCCESS – BY FELLOW.
  10. Hiring Expert Advisors to improve efforts.  You cannot afford to hope and pray for positive changes to come when the economy is so uncertain.  Seek out sage advice from experienced business partners, mentors and financial experts.  This could mean making the most of your connections, pivoting to adapt to changing market conditions, or shifts.  If need be – hire the right consultants to determine where best to use your resources.  Respond proactively in order to increase growth, performance, sustainability and stability.  Perhaps you need to focus more on PR, marketing, branding, consumer needs, diversify products/services, or to become more resilient and offer more options.  Where there is confusion, get help and invest in expert help. 11. Master the art of teamwork. Lead for the message and the people.  Don’t try and do it all by yourself, you will burn out.  Good modern leadership means not spreading yourself so thin, as you will not perform well in any role.  Aim to ensure every role is covered and every person is a leader, managing themselves and communicating effectively with all other roles.  Look after each person, appreciate them.  Be mindful that every role and member is vital to the overall success and growth of your organization.  Pay attention to how you listen and act to others, through understanding and finding solutions quickly.
  12. Quick powerful morning meetings.  These will ensure ‘all are involved’ and are on the same page.  This means being constantly aware of numbers, the plan, mastering those KPI’s and understanding your strategic objectives.  Adjusting where necessary as you move through each quarter, to consistently improve.  Every morning you must speak with your staff, and you must be in communication with your numbers guy/gal, to understand your fiscal year-end 12 month accounting period.  Have an edge by studying the past, present and future, and see what will affect your sector, for example: market shifts, customers behaviour, current trends, supply chains, levy’s, tariffs, trade deals and European business.
  13. Understanding Government decisions and spending.  Watch what government members such as Rachel Reeves are doing, as you need to be aware of the impact of how to make your business decisions daily.  One small tweak could change everything for better or for worse.   For example; pricing strategies, product offers, investing in experts, cutting costs and hiring etc.  Avoid costly mistakes.  Your impact has to influence the behaviors of consumers in the right ways.  We are all feeling the pinch at the moment, so grasp governments plans, as this directly influences spending behaviour.  We are ‘as consumers’ more sophisticated than ever before, and influenced by a greater awareness of where we spend money today, through tough times consumers become more educated.
  14. Learn core principles that govern life and business. What are these?  These are essentially about constitional standards and ethics, care for quality and care for others. The key elements that can help you avoid costly mistakes and help you perform better.  This includes diversity, because through hiring those from various becakgrounds you will have a greater power to understand others, and have a greater impact on your performance.  You must be aware of the differences that make up life and business, such as understanding core standards, values, upholding laws, fairness, integrity, rights and environmental factors.  This includes being aware of people’s varying needs.  I cannot emphasise enough that historically businesses that are open minded simply will perform better.  Embracing everyone in your organisation, and being mindful of how best to treat each individual will pay you back.  Be sure to learn here about constitutional principles: The Constitution Unit – UCL – University College London.  Source: The Constitution Unit What are constitutional principles?
  15. Learn business skills take the courses. Understand practical and hands on skills to help you avoid the pitfalls of failure. Grasping legal issues including employment law, employment disputes, raising funds from equity, health and safety, and the all important skill of negotiation of deals.  What courses will help you be on top? What courses will give you an edge?  Are you a master of your craft?  Through mastering the vital business skills to help you avoid disasters you are then not ignorant of core business skills, principles and laws.  Are you out of touch with your sector?  Are you out of date with selling skills?  Are you missing basic communication skills?  Then get trained by taking courses, listen to podcasts, read business news and blogs etc.
  16. AI.  We cannot avoid the power of integrating effective AI.  This is a cutting edge tool can help you align with your most important goals, and can manage boring and repetitive tasks so you can focus on stratrgy.  Like it or not, it is here for now and is being used by many companies to have that important strategic edge.  Leverage this in your strategy to help you become more powerful, effective and efficient and to BEAT COMPETITION.  You need predictive analytics,  data driven insights – not guess work!  And as data is the backbone of AI, you need to leverage it now see where you can reduce risk and increase growth, plus understand customer demand.  AI can even save time and money if you master AI correctly through correct efforts.  If you negate AI you will get left behind and crash and burn in this day and age. BTW THIS IS IMPORTANT:  A.I. IS A POWERFUL TOOL – BUT DON’T BE SUCKED IN BY THE DARK SIDE, ABUSE AND MANIPULATION OF IT TO GAIN ANYTHING.  I wrote an AI blog here which explains everything. get familiar with AI if you are not yet.
