Being A Business Expert: What Have I Learned About Running A Small Operation?
Being An Expert In Business: Everyone Knows Something Which They Can Share!
Now, I was not always an expert! Who is? We learn, we get better and we grow. And – I found a passion for working in the Small Business sector. I enjoy working with micro business owners also, and my life consists of serving others, continual growth, expansion and awareness but also of change.
Simply – ‘I am committed to my craft!’ and I am passionate about what I do, so in a sense it is easy for me to enjoy each day in this area.
But, what have I learned about it all and what would I have done differently?
I have learned a great deal, and continue to learn a great deal about my industry because I care about it, and love to be a part of it. But it wasn’t always a great experience for me, I had to learn the long hard way.

There is no doubt that for the first few years I failed miserably as I attempted MANY THINGS halfheartedly.
So, I was not committed 110% to anything. This was my biggest downfall. I had to really firstly define what I was going to do and why.
If I carried on the same ways I was destined to never get anywhere.
So, my first realization was without doubt GET CLEAR.
I had to find out what I was hoping to do and what I would enjoy doing whilst actually creating an income from it.
We are in a time when being creative and new ideas are building new businesses all over the world so it is an exciting time. There’s is no better time to be sharing what you know and building a life and/or business around it. And instead of searching for endless opportunities – why not search for ‘your place in the Market’.
Why not become an expert in business today?
With an uncertain economy this means this a great time to be a solution to society and share what you already know.
I know that I got help, and I studied other experts, but I also took massive action every day, so this is without doubt what helped me even though I saw others around me failing left right and centre. And they were failing because they simply kept trying various things.
They did not commit to one thing and master that craft. And I think that this is what I have learned the most.
To do something with massive effort, total commitment and laser focus.
Not chasing others around, looking for the break, magic potion or hoping for an opportunity to come my way.
So, being an expert to me means being 110% IN!
Getting the right help and investing in myself was critical also as I couldn’t do things on my own. I was burning out.
So, desperation, ignorance and blindly moving forward was not ideal, and not creating results, therefore I had to start over and today as an expert it feels amazing. If you are also an expert in some way you will know what I mean. I want to do my best, uphold a responsibility for my clients and deliver the best of me. So it is an honor to have become an expert.
You may not realise it yet but you do have experiences in many areas.
It is just a matter of looking into what you know or feel you could express!
For example, you don’t need to have qualifications in any particular area to start a business or follow a passion. You just need to know WHAT YOUR IDEAS, EXPERIENCES or PASSIONS ARE and ‘whom’ you are aiming at.
My suggestion to everyone i meet is to get that clarity around your core values and beliefs and look at what matters to you.
It matters to me to help others, it matters to me to support others ideas, it matters to me that others passions are my priority, it matters to me that I can share my expertise with others when they wish to create a dynamic, exciting new small business model.
I was there once, so I know what it is like. Thus I knew that I would love to help others with the help I once needed.
The key was in creating quality products and services.
Something else I learned perhaps the harder way, was that although I was small and am small in operation this didn’t mean that I could do it all.
I simply learned this in a very tough and challenging way. I knew that others who were better than me were needed for me to grow. So, I looked at hiring others who we experts in their roles. And I would highly recommend this to you. Whether you outsource, hire or have a small team, this is something which needs to be figured out
Being An Expert In Business: What Have I Learned About Being A Small Operation?
Moving from South Africa To The UK
Not me, but my partners cousin.
My fiancee Lisa has a cousin in South Africa and, she and her family moved to the UK.
She has wanted this for many years and was determined to follow through with her plan. Many years passed and she has never gave up and we knew that she would be able to realize her and her families dreams of becoming English citizens. I can say that they MADE IT. There are still areas to tie up and the family have had to be apart from eachother from time to time – BUT they are doing it.
Many years, a great deal of emotion, financial commitments, massive change and even the unknown risks of cultural differences were all a factor in this but they still reached their goal.
They knew that they wanted to start a fresh and give their kids the best opportunity with a new way of life and with an English education.

So, what does this have to do with Being An Expert In Business? Aha, well, here we go:
- DETERMINATION = having a strong personal will
- FOCUS = an ability to stay in the game and do the right things
- GREAT DEFINITION AND KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR GOAL AND PLAN = A solid vision every day
- PERSEVERANCE = keeping on with power and strength
- PERSISTENCE = maintaining a firm continual course
- STRATEGY = Having a smart way to do so
- BELIEF= choosing to feel confident when required and needed
- CONSISTENT ACTION = Non stop specific tasks
- SPECIFICS = knowing exactly what is required of you
Like with any major life or business goal these factors will be a part of the overall process because they are required. And being an expert in any field mean that we need to fully understand these areas and apply them.
So, it’s no different really to approaching our dream Small business or becoming an expert on something.
If we want t be the best AS I DO: then we have to know how to tap into the right market and go ahead and dominate that market with the right, direct and consistent application.
This involves of course, the right marketing, relevant branding, powerful engaging content, research in defining our role and passions and area or niche market, and also becoming aware of our core customers whilst aiming at beating others, being different than others and also being open to LEARNING CONTINUALLY ABOUT OUR NICHE. But also having those experts around us to help us.
This is what I call ‘Being and expert in business’.
Small business or big it’s still the same!
If you are a solo person or entity then you will of course still want to start being the best you can be.
Albeit being a humble yet powerful force without allowing ego to destroy you and others.
You will want to expand and be seen in the right ways and with a solid reputation, and in doing so you stand out and even dominate and can gain market share even above large corporations who don’t have your personal care for people and products.
So, how can you dominate even above corporates?
1) People can trust you PERSONALLY MORE
2) You can offer a more PERSONAL SERVICE AND FOLLOW UP
3) People can TRUST you as they Connect with you 1ON1
4) You can offer variety of products and services as YOU MANAGE YOUR OPERATION WITHOUT STAFF ISSUES of production
5) You will have less costs and management issues of course, so you can place more attention into delivering THE BEST and developing the best
There are many more reasons why as a single business person you can dominate by being an expert in business.
Not to mention that you can stand out and so you can have the same platform as anyone with the right application of marketing and branding.
Now, don’t think that just because you are a small business owner you are insignificant, and won’t compare to other more established businesses.
A well branded large company may have millions of customers, but think about it, when you have LESS CUSTOMERS you can be more targeted to them and with creating greater connections and communication to solve their issues and create greater customer care.
So if you think about it, as a small business owner you can also become much more EFFICIENT and RELIABLE with what YOU CAN MANAGE.
Let me give you an example:
I was recently with a company called Hostgator and you may have heard of them? Well they are pretty big and well established and have millions of customers. They are very well branded also and have a great market share. However, I have had a few issues with them.
Look at this:
1) I have been with them for over 2 years at this point
2) I have never required customer services
3) I was loyal to them and even promoted them on my blog
But……
- With no warning they suspended my blog and stopped me from getting access to it as they said it had plug in issue. I felt at that time that they chewed me up and SPAT ME OUT!
- My blog had no business for 10 days due to it being suspended so I lost business revenue
- I couldn’t get through to have a 1on1 chat which they offer on their site and when the 30 minutes was over I was cut off
- When I phoned them I was on hold for 45 minutes trying to sort out what I needed to do
- After 2 years of being with them I found myself ABANDONED from MY OWN BLOG and didn’t understand what to do as i’m not that techy
- The call ended up costing me £230. That’s right. No kidding.
Would you say that this is GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE?
Well – they are a good company and I totally respect them. But being An Expert In Business ‘to me’ is getting it right from the round floor up.
I couldn’t care less how big they are as I WANT THE PERSONAL TOUCH. Don’t You?
But, here’s the great thing about it. It made me realise the areas where I could be even better. Yepp, I learned from them, and that some companies are in some ways TOO BIG and have forgotten the importance of CUSTOMER SERVICE.

In fact, their mistakes helped my business grow revenue as I instantly improved what I offered. Thanks Hostgator.
So, the point here is that it really doesn’t matter how long a company has been in business or how large it seems, if we can learn from it all, we become experts and we gain loyalty and customer retention.
We develop our ideas and we are moving in the right direction.
So, take it from me. As a successful personal business owner myself you can do the same or better than I can if you can apply greater ways to operate and deliver goods and services. My advice would be get a professional to help you to decide how to take your business to the next level as a professional will keep your accountable, he or she has already been there so they have experience and they can help you way faster than you can do by yourself.
Being An Expert In Business: What Have I Learned About Being A Small Operation?
I must say that, since everything has been resolved and their customer service is A1 I still trust them. So, they have adjusted what they do I am pleased to say. I am not here to mock others, I am simply here to share experiences as i am passionate about business and good customer service.
So, take a leaf out of others books. Learn from the best, make your business your own, be different, embrace challenges as they help you grow and never stop working on your goals. if I can create a great Small Business operation which works for me and grows consistently then I am absolutely sure that you can also.

P.s do remember this: REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN HAVE THE EDGE ON OTHERS AND A WINNING BUSINESS: AND NEVER THINK THAT YOU ARE TOO SMALL TO COMPETE! ON THE CONTRARY. BY HAVING PERSONAL STRATEGIES AND EFFECTIVE TOOLS AND SYSTEMS THAT SET YOU APART FROM THE REST YOU CAN BE THE LEADER, MASTER AND BUSINESS EXPERT with the greatest market share.
Finally: what tools and resources should you use?
You should never use the cheapest options just because you are trying to save money or cut back. What you may want to do is look for the tools which will make your operation more efficient, productive and effective. This may mean exploring expert tools and comparing various tools for functionality and for finding what works best for your team. A poor tool may hinder production, progress and your ability to keep high standards, so ensure that you use tools which enhance the day to day business running and enable you and your team to work at optimum levels. For example; I use the tools which support me, have great customer care, deliver high quality features yet are designed to be fairly simple in use.
This is because I want to know that I can use them without needing a degree in technology, and i can also pass them onto team members and explain what they can do in the knowledge that team members can quickly pic up and be trained to master the tool. Also, the tool has to be giving me my R.O.I, so my investment into it pays itself back very quickly. Hope this helps.
To conclude: we do not need to be bigger than a 50 person operation, and in fact we can be just 10 member team and still create significant presence in almost any market when we are able to truly understand how to dominate through specific strategic factors.
